Horticultural Technician

A Horticultural Technician grows, installs, and maintains indoor and outdoor plants, builds urban and rural landscapes, maintains outdoor properties, cares for turf grass and golf courses and installs and maintains irrigation systems. Specifically, a Horticultural Technician:

  • grows plants using different propagation techniques
  • identifies nutrient requirements of plants, applies fertilizers and monitors plants
  • transplants, installs and prunes plants
  • analyzes plant watering requirements and installs and maintains irrigation systems
  • establishes and maintains turf grass
  • constructs landscapes according to drawings
  • controls plant pests and diseases using integrated pest management techniques
  • recycles waste materials

Pattern Maker

A Pattern Maker:

  • Reads and interprets complex engineering drawings, pattern drawings and work process documentation
  • Designs and creates foundry patterns and core boxes from metal, wood, plastic and polystyrene for parts and components cast from metal
  • Builds precision pattern tooling using wood and metal cutting machines and equipment, including saws, drills, grinders, lathes, mills and electrical discharge machines
  • Performs work-in-process measuring and checking using specialized and precision tools and equipment

Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Programmer

A CNC Programmer develops programming for Computerized Numerical and Direct Numerical controlled machines by:

  • Demonstrating safe work practices and techniques
  • Defining areas of workpiece to be machined
  • Determining CNC programming operations
  • Planning the metal removal process
  • Developing tool paths
  • Post-processing tool path information
  • Generating CNC job documentation
  • Implementing CNC machining processes
  • Optimizing programs
  • Archiving/maintaining files

Industrial Electrician

An Industrial Electrician lays out, inspects, assembles, installs, troubleshoots, repairs and maintains (including programming, calibration and preventive/predictive maintenance) electrical fixtures, apparatus, control equipment and wiring for industrial electrical systems, as well as equipment and systems such as motors, generators, distribution equipment systems, wiring systems, lighting systems, motor drives, stand-by power systems, instrumentation, communication, security, renewable energy and energy storage systems. Specifically, an Industrial Electrician:

  • plans installations from blueprints, sketches and specifications and installs all electrical and electronic devices
  • systematically diagnoses faults in electrical and electronic systems and equipment and repairs or replaces electrical and electronic components as required
  • measures, cuts, threads, bends, assembles and installs conduits and other electrical conductor raceways
  • splices and terminates electrical conductors
  • tests electrical and electronic equipment for proper function

The new Electrical Trades’ Curriculum Standard will be phased in over multiple years.

  • The new 2024 level 1 will be implemented by all TDAs as of September 1, 2024.
  • The new 2024 level 2 will be implemented by all TDAs as of September 1, 2025.
  • The new 2024 levels 3 & 4 will be implemented by all TDAs as of September 1, 2026. Level 4 does not apply to 309C.
  • Existing 2003 Curriculum levels expire on the August 31st date prior to implementation of the new level.

Powered Lift Truck Technician

A Powered Lift Truck Technician inspects, diagnoses and repairs lift truck equipment. Powered lift trucks are powered through electric motors or internal combustion engines designed to lift and transport material. Specifically, a Powered Lift Truck Technician:

  • inspects, diagnoses and services powered lift truck systems, including: electrical, steering, braking, hydraulic, frames, transmissions, drive axles, suspension, and wheels and lifting systems pertaining to powered lift truck equipment
  • diagnoses and services drive units and control systems in electric vehicles
  • troubleshoots and repairs powered lift truck internal combustion engines
  • uses safety techniques for lifting, rigging, blocking, and lockout devices
  • operates hand, power, specialized, precision, and electronic service tools to make required repairs
  • prepares estimates, work plans and communicates with customers on problems and repairs

Construction Boilermaker

A Construction Boilermaker builds, installs, erects, tests, maintains and repairs all types of boilers, tanks and pressure vessels, and performs all types of structural and plate work on dust, air, gas, steam, oil, water and other liquid-tight pressure vessels. Specifically, a Construction Boilermaker:

  • works from fabrication drawings (prints) to fabricate components from steel or other materials
  • uses various metal forming machines such as rotary shears, punch pressess and bending rolls
  • tests boiler systems for leaks, defects and other deficiencies to ensure they are operating safely and efficiently
  • attaches rigging and works with hoisting devices to lift components into place

Industrial Mechanic Millwright

An Industrial Mechanic Millwright works on industrial machinery, mechanical equipment and components, including mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, fuel, lubrication, cooling and exhaust systems, and pumps, fans, tanks, conveyors, presses, generators and pneumatic and hydraulic controls. Specifically, an Industrial Mechanic Millwright:

  • uses machine tools such as lathes and milling machines and fabrication tools such as welders, breaks, presses, power threaders and punches
  • uses precision tools such as laser alignment equipment, dial indicators, micrometers and precision and optical levels
  • uses testing equipment such as vibration analysis as well as other techniques used in predictive and preventive maintenance
  • installs, maintains and services compressed air, water and exhaust ducting to robotics, pumps, presses, compressors, turbines, material-handling systems, gearboxes and other machinery

Powerline Technician

A Powerline Technician constructs, maintains and repairs overhead and underground electrical power transmission and distribution systems and communication networks. Specifically, a Powerline Technician:

  • prepares work plans
  • installs, maintains and removes power system poles and maintains transmission towers and structures
  • installs and maintains overhead and underground power systems
  • splices and terminates conductors and related wiring to connect power distribution and transmission networks
  • troubleshoots overhead and underground power systems
  • installs, maintains and removes transformers and hardware
  • installs, operates and maintains system protection, control and instrumentation equipment and communications systems

Construction Craft Worker

A Construction Craft Worker works on a wide variety of structures, such as residential, industrial, commercial, and institutional sites as well as hydroelectric dams, roadways, bridges, tunnels, mining and railways. They may also work on utility, landscape and pipeline projects. Specifically, a Construction Craft Worker:

  • is responsible for site preparation and cleanup, setting up and removing access equipment and working on concrete, masonry, steel, wood and pre-cast erecting projects
  • handles materials and equipment and perform demolition, excavation and compaction activities
  • is responsible for site security
  • may specialize in operating off-road vehicles, drilling and blasting, scaling, sandblasting, high pressure washing, diving, tunnelling and performing emergency rescue

Institutional Cook

An Institutional Cook prepares meals in both small and large quantities using bulk-cooking methods in conventional, cook chill or cook freeze environments. An Institutional Cook prepares food to meet individual dietary needs, including health, religious needs, ethnic preferences and budgetary requirements. An Institutional Cook may work in retirement or long-term care homes, hospitals, childcare centres, school dining areas, correctional facilities and corporate environments. Specifically, an Institutional Cook:

  • prepares meals for special diets and understands nutritional restrictions and portion size to be served
  • uses standardized recipes and specialized equipment for modification techniques during food preparation to achieve the prescribed or recommended textures and viscosity
  • prepares and cooks meats, poultry and seafood
  • prepares stock, soups and sauces from scratch or convenience
  • prepares and assembles complete breakfasts, sandwiches, salads and dressings
  • prepares baked goods, pastries, desserts and vegetables
  • is knowledgeable about weights and measures, hygiene, equipment handling, sanitation and workplace safety
