New credentials

In 2023, Skilled Trades Ontario announced the launch of new credentials for journeypersons and apprentices. These included redesigned Certificates of Qualification and wallet cards.

Certificates of Qualification

Effective November 1, 2023, Skilled Trades Ontario has implemented a new Certificate of Qualification design. Skilled Trades Ontario is taking a phased approach in the printing and distribution of new certificates.

Currently, new certificates are being issued to all individuals who have:

  • Met the requirements according to the Building Opportunities in the Skilled Trades Act, 2021 and
  • Qualified as a journeyperson in a designated trade on or after January 1, 2022.

Certificates issued prior to January 1, 2022 remain valid and are fully recognized by Skilled Trades Ontario.

Certificate of Qualification Renewal Payment

  • Journeypersons in compulsory trades are required to pay an annual fee of $60 plus HST.
  • A wallet card expiry sticker is issued upon renewal, and the STO Public Register is updated to reflect the new expiry date.

Wallet cards and expiry stickers

Skilled Trades Ontario has resumed issuing wallet cards and expiry stickers to all active journeypersons and apprentices in compulsory and non-compulsory trades.

Expiry stickers will be issued only to journeypersons who have a Skilled Trades Ontario wallet card and are active in a compulsory trade. Each sticker displays the certificate’s expiration date and the individual’s Skilled Trades Ontario account number. Stickers are provided after the renewal fee has been paid in full.
