  • Sponsor an apprentice

As a sponsor in Ontario, you play a critical role in developing the next generation of skilled trades professionals. A sponsor is typically the apprentice’s employer in Ontario and is responsible for making sure that an apprentice receives the training required as part of an apprenticeship program.

Who can be a sponsor

  • An individual (e.g., a certified journeyperson, contractor, or employer)
  • A group (e.g., union, industry association, or consortium). For information about group sponsorship, please contact Skilled Trades Ontario by email at groupsponsor@skilledtradesontario.ca

Why sponsor an apprentice

Becoming a sponsor benefits both your business and skilled trades in Ontario.

Build your future workforce
Taking on an apprentice trains the next generation of workers. If you are also an employer, it helps you prepare for the future of your business.

Boost employee loyalty
Apprentices are more likely to remain loyal to companies that invest in their training and long-term success (Source: Canadian Apprenticeship Forum report, 2010).

Customize training to your business
While you train an apprentice to provincial and national (Red Seal) industry standards, you also train them to understand your unique workplace.

Access financial incentives
As a sponsor, you may qualify for grants and/or federal tax credits when you train or hire an apprentice. Learn more.

Recruiting potential apprentices through the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP) can also be a cost-effective way to train and hire young workers.

Recruit top talent early
Local colleges, high schools, and the Pre-Apprenticeship Program can help you find the best talent and match you with the most qualified apprenticeship candidate.

How to sponsor an apprentice

  • Step 1: Assess training capacity
On-the-job training is a key part of all apprenticeship programs. Before sponsoring an apprentice, make sure you or the trainers:

    • Have the facilities, staff and equipment needed to provide the training as set out in the Apprenticeship Training Standard Logbook or Schedule of Training
    • Have the necessary qualifications to conduct training
    • Can provide the apprentice with time to attend classroom (in-school) training
    • Comply with all relevant Ontario legislation and trade-specific regulations, including Ontario minimum wage laws

    Trades with apprentice-to-journeyperson ratios

Under the Building Opportunities in the Skilled Trades Act, 2021 (BOSTA), trades with ratios must follow a 1:1 journeyperson-to-apprentice ratio.

For a list of trades subject to ratios, see Ontario Regulation 876/21.

If you fall out of compliance with a ratio (e.g., a certified journeyperson leaves your business), you must resolve the issue as soon as possible to remain compliant.

  • Step 2: Sign a Sponsor Agreement
If you have never sponsored an apprentice in Ontario, you must be approved by Skilled Trades Ontario before you can enter into a Training Agreement with an apprentice. When you have signed a Sponsor Agreement and have been approved, you will receive a Sponsor ID# which is required to register a Training Agreement.

Please note you may be required to provide supporting documentation that confirms your capacity to train as part of the approval process.

You can complete the Sponsor Agreement online through the Skilled Trades Ontario Digital Portal.

Alternately, you can download and submit the agreement to Skilled Trades Ontario by:

    • Email: Please call Skilled Trades Ontario for secure email instructions at 647-847-3000 or Toll-free (Ontario only) at 1-855-299-0028 Monday-Friday from 7am-7pm.
    • Mail: Skilled Trades Ontario, PO Box 2354 RPO SQ1 Shoppers, Mississauga, ON L5B 3C8

  • Step 3: Find an apprentice
Once you’ve confirmed your training capacity and have been authorized as a sponsor, your next step is to find an apprentice. An apprentice candidate must:

    • Be at least 16 years old.
    • Have legal permission to work in Canada (e.g., a valid Social Insurance Number).
    • Meet the education requirements for the trade. Learn more.

    Where to find apprentices:

    • Online job listings: Post opportunities on the national job bank.
    • Employment Ontario: Get in-person recruitment help at Employment Ontario (EO).
    • Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP): High school students can gain school credits while pursuing an apprenticeship through this program. Sponsors interested in hiring student apprentices can connect with OYAP for more details.

Apprentices moving from another province or territory

You can hire an apprentice who began their training outside of Ontario. The apprenticeship application process is the same as that for individuals in Ontario (see Step 4 below).

Examples of what you might request to assess their prior experience:

    • Work experience: A signed letter and/or documentation from previous employer(s) confirming employment and skills/hours acquired in the trade.
    • Technical training: A program transcript or letter from their college or training institution.
    • Proof of apprenticeship registration from their former province or territory: A copy of their training agreement or a registration wallet card.

Skilled Trades Ontario will verify and apply any credits for prior learning and training once the application has been submitted.

Learn more about apprentice mobility here.

  • Step 4: Apply for an apprenticeship
Once you’ve selected an apprentice, fill out and submit an Application for Apprenticeship Training online through the Skilled Trades Ontario Portal. The Portal is the quickest way to complete the process.

If an apprentice candidate is 16-17 years old or you are unable to apply online:

    1. Download and complete the Application for Apprenticeship Training.
    2. Ensure the form is signed by you (the sponsor) and apprentice (or parent/guardian, if applicable).
    3. Submit it to Skilled Trades Ontario by:
      • Email: Please call Skilled Trades Ontario for secure email instructions at 647-847-3000 or Toll-free (Ontario only) at 1-855-299-0028 Monday-Friday from 7am-7pm.
      • Mail: Skilled Trades Ontario, PO Box 2354 RPO SQ1 Shoppers, Mississauga, ON L5B 3C8

Skilled Trades Ontario will review and notify you if the application is approved.

For help with credits for prior learning and training, please contact Skilled Trades Ontario by:

    • Email: Please call Skilled Trades Ontario for secure email instructions at 647-847-3000 or Toll-free (Ontario only) at 1-855-299-0028 Monday-Friday from 7am-7pm.
    • Phone: 647-847-3000, or Toll Free in Ontario at 1-855-299-0028, Monday to Friday, 7:00 am to 7:00 pm EST.

  • Step 5: Sign a Training Agreement
Once approved, you and the apprentice candidate will complete a Training Agreement which will then be registered by Skilled Trades Ontario. This agreement outlines the responsibilities and obligations of both the apprentice and the sponsor, including compliance with BOSTA and relevant regulations.

    When the agreement is registered:

    • Both the sponsor and the apprentice can apply for provincial and federal financial incentives.
    • The apprentice may engage in the practice of a compulsory trade.

  • Step 6: Ensure the apprentice receives training
As a sponsor, you are responsible for ensuring that the apprentice receives training in accordance with the apprenticeship training program established by Skilled Trades Ontario.

The Apprenticeship Training Standard Logbook or Schedule of Training sets out the on-the-job training requirements. You can find these and other helpful resources on our Trades information page.

    Your responsibilities:

    • Regularly review the Training Standard with the apprentice and sign off on the skills as they are learned.
    • For Red Seal trades, make sure you and your apprentice regularly review the resources on the Red Seal website. Understanding the National Occupational Analysis “NOA” or the Red Seal Occupational Standard “RSOS”) for your trade will help your apprentice succeed in their program and on the certifying exam.
    • Notify Skilled Trades Ontario of any changes to your business information or Registered Training Agreement.

    Supporting in-school training

Helping your apprentice succeed means ensuring that they are allowed the time to attend in-school training as part of their program. Talk to your apprentice early on to determine the best options for training times and encourage your apprentice to register well in advance as classes fill up quickly.

    • Ensure your apprentice has time to attend required in-school training.
      • Skilled Trades Ontario will log schooling preferences for apprentices and send this information to the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development (MLITSD). For help with schooling preferences, contact Skilled Trades Ontario by:
        • Email: Please call Skilled Trades Ontario for secure email instructions at 647-847-3000 or Toll-free (Ontario only) at 1-855-299-0028 Monday-Friday from 7am-7pm.
        • Phone: 647-847-3000, or Toll Free in Ontario at 1-855-299-0028, Monday to Friday, 7:00 am to 7:00 pm EST.
      • MLITSD will continue to be responsible for administering in-school training for apprentices. If your apprentice is eligible to attend in-school training, they will receive notification from MLITSD.
    • Collaborate with your apprentice to choose the most convenient time to attend in-school training and arrange time off from work.
    • Apprentices qualify for Employment Insurance (EI) during this period.

Visit the Current apprentices page for more information.

  • Step 7: Confirm apprenticeship program completion
Once your apprentice finishes all required on-the-job and in-school training, it is time to officially complete the apprenticeship program through Skilled Trades Ontario. Work with your apprentice to follow these steps to ensure a smooth process.

    Confirm completion of apprentice records

    This includes:

    • Apprenticeship Training Standard Logbook or Schedule of Training
    • Confirm the apprentice has received a Notice of completion of schooling requirements from Skilled Trades Ontario

Fill out and submit the Apprenticeship Completion Form

As the sponsor you are responsible for ensuring all program requirements are completed and apprenticeship records are up to date. You may be asked to provide supporting documentation as part of the completion process.

    • Download and complete the Skilled Trades Ontario Apprenticeship Completion Form
    • Both the sponsor and apprentice must sign the form
    • Submit the form to Skilled Trades Ontario by:
      • Email: Please call Skilled Trades Ontario for secure email instructions at 647-847-3000 or Toll-free (Ontario only) at 1-855-299-0028 Monday-Friday from 7am-7pm.
      • Mail: Skilled Trades Ontario, PO Box 2354 RPO SQ1 Shoppers, Mississauga, ON L5B 3C8

Skilled Trades Ontario reviews the form
Skilled Trades Ontario will review the Apprenticeship Completion Form to confirm apprenticeship program completion.

Apprentice receives their Certificate of Apprenticeship in the mail
Once reviewed and approved, Skilled Trades Ontario will mail the apprentice their Certificate of Apprenticeship.

Congratulations to you and your completed apprentice on reaching this milestone – and thank you for supporting apprenticeship in Ontario.
