There are 121 non-compulsory trades in Ontario. Of these, 60 non-compulsory trades have certifying exams and offer Certificates of Qualification. Apprenticeship programs are available in all non-compulsory trades. Individuals practicing non-compulsory trades do not need a Registered Training Agreement, Provisional Certificate of Qualification or Certificate of Qualification to practice legally in Ontario and do not appear in the Skilled Trades Ontario Public Register. However, there are many career benefits to pursuing any trade through apprenticeship, and where possible, earning a Certificate of Qualification. This includes listing certifications and apprenticeship experience on job applications, membership in professional associations and the networking opportunities gained through an apprenticeship.
